  • CJ Mirra The Big Sea Vinyl

Four years in the making The Big Sea, from filmmakers Lewis Arnold and Chris Nelson is an expose of surfing’s hidden links to ‘Cancer Alley’, the true cost of our toxic relationship with Neoprene as well as the natural alternative that literally grows on trees.

Combing beautiful surf cinematography with lived experiences from activists and insights from scientists, environmental campaigners & industry insiders, this timely tale uses the lens of surfing to explore the wider issues of environmental racism, greenwashing and corporate responsibility.

At the heart of it all is the power we have as individuals to effect change.

The film and conversations around The Big Sea have lead to more than 25 wetsuit brands adopting natural rubber and the announcement of the world’s first Neoprene-free surf shop. May 2025 saw the historic closure of the controversial Neoprene plant at the heart of the film, due to a drop in demand for its toxic product.

The Big Sea OST sees CJ Mirra cover new sonic ground, often going beyond the ethereal soundscapes that have defined him, writing in a more primal and instinctive way. There’s an emotional richness to the album that unites the weight and intensity of human experience with the cold, impersonal nature of the industrial complex – a sonic collision of community versus big business, ocean versus industry, where a deep rawness sits alongside tenderness, always with sensitivity to the subject matter of the film. “There’s a very wide range of sounds across this soundtrack. From the guttural guitars, human voices, including two tracks featuring Softmax, pianos, keyboards that connect you to the people, to the elements that represent the omnipresence of the plant itself,” explains CJ Mirra. “For that I experimented with more angular, industrial, electronic synthesised sounds that feel oppressive and unnatural.

The Big Sea: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is available Thursday 24th July digitally onall streamers and on limited edition vinyl through The Big Sea and via CJ Mirra Elastic Stage and BANDCAMP (coming soon)
